Conditions women face in sex trafficking





Society creates situations in which a young man or woman has no other chance of earning a wage for themselves or their family except through prostitution. It is also common for trafficked women to be charged to buy their passports back. Female circumcision, the use of the veil in French schools, polygamy and prostitution have entered the political discourse of many Western countries, controversially revealing the presence of migrant women. In various countries in different continents we are beginning to encounter forms of slave labour and over-exploitation of the labour force which are dragging certain groups of people into non-human conditions. Women's lower economic status is worse in countries undergoing economic transition. Some countries, however, are creating procedures and regulations that would allow women to apply for permanent residency through their status as trafficking victims. In our understanding, this is not to deny that sex trafficking exists as a form of violence against women, but to demand that multiple perspectives be taken into account when considering the phenomenon.
